These pictures were taken near Matthews, Indiana last year. Indiana has a number of covered bridges, particularly in the southern part of the state. Matthews is in the east central section of Indiana where many of these structures have either been destroyed by vandalism over the years or were lost to neglect before the value of the old bridges was fully appreciated. I know when I was growing up in the area, there were quite a few more than there are today. How sad that so many were lost. I've yet to see a covered bridge where I live now. They may exist somewhere in Louisiana but I've never come across one nor do I know of one anywhere in the state.

ReplyDeleteWe have a covered bridge like this very close to Waterloo, which seems to be the only one in Ontario. We call it "The kissing bridge". Great pictures!

Those are great. We have a couple of covered bridges way out in the country, but they are hard to find! There's something really cool about them, huh?

ReplyDeleteThat is a cool bridge. As a kid covered bridges scared me because of the scene in Disney's Sleepy Hollow where the headless horseman is chasing Ichabod Crane.
ReplyDeleteI asked a history teacher why we didn't have covered bridges in Texas. He said the bridges were constructed to deal with heavy winter ice and snow, not a big problem in the south.

ReplyDeleteShannon, that makes sense as the bridges are very durable. Most of them are well over a hundred years old so they've certainly endured. That would also explain why I am not aware of any in Louisiana as we certainly have no real winter weather here either. Thanks for sharing that information!
